State Awards $30M in Grants to Expand Internet Access in 11 N.C. Counties Grants funded by ARPA to connect 13,000 plus families to high-speed internet part of Governor Cooper’s plan to close the digital divide

More than 13,000 households and 582 businesses across North Carolina are set to receive access to high-speed internet thanks to more than $30.8 million in NCDIT-awarded GREAT grants, Governor Roy Cooper announced today. This is in addition to the $23.4 million in GREAT grants NCDIT awarded on July 18.

Department of Information Technology’s (NCDIT) Government Data Analytics Center joined The Hunt Institute and the Office of Governor Roy Cooper in sponsoring the first-ever North Carolina Education Datathon, an event which paired teams of North Carolina students with volunteer mentors to leverage technology and data to address disparities created by the digital divide.

Qualified internet service providers and electric membership cooperatives providing internet service can now apply for up to $350 million in grants to expand broadband infrastructure in North Carolina and get more people connected to high-speed internet. Funds from the federal American Rescue Plan are being used to provide the largest ever round of Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) Grants available in North Carolina.
